One of the most important requirements for motor vehicles in Australia is that the driver must be able to see the road clearly. Also no obstruction should interfere with the line of sight of the driver.
This is especially true for Australian truck drivers. Whether they travel in Sydney or anywhere else, they must have the clearest possible view of the road while driving heavy commercial vehicles.
A windscreen of a truck should therefore be repaired or replaced if it is chipped or cracked and this should be done immediately. Failure to do this poses a great risk to the truck, its occupants and all other road users.
The area on the windscreen in front of the driver that extends across to the centreline of the truck is allowed to have any of two of the following defects, but no more.
- A “bulls-eye” crack of up to 16mm in diameter.
- A crack from edge up to 75mm long.
- A hairline crack of up to 30mm long.
If the truck windscreen happens to have more damage than that stated above, then you would just have to replace the entire windscreen. Driving with these damages is both dangerous and illegal.
In trucks and other commercial vehicles, the design and type of vehicle construction reduces the need to see through the rear windows when driving. You should also have in mind that no film at all is allowed on the lower part of the windscreen.
When replacing the windscreen, also have in mind that reflective or mirror like tinted film is not acceptable as it may affect other drivers on the road by reflecting sunlight or headlight beams directly into the eyes. A tinted or opaque band that runs across the top part of the windscreen is only allowed so long as it is lower than 10% of the windscreen height and that it is above the part on the windscreen that is swept by the vehicle wipers.
Trucks are quite tricky vehicles to manoeuvre as compared to others. Also these large vehicles take up a lot of the road and it is essential that truck drivers can see clearly in all directions around their vehicles. Especially when entering busy city traffic such as Sydney.
